My The Country Life column kicked off the other day with a column on why roosters crow and, what, if anything, can be done to keep them from crowing. A reader called to talk about the rooster she had when she was a kid. Her father built a special house with a low ceiling for the rooster to keep it from crowing; the rooster could stand, but not very tall and couldn’t stretch up, which the reader’s father believed is necessary for a rooster to crow. I don’t know if that’s true, but I have seen MY rooster stretch before crowing. And this did keep the reader’s rooster quiet.
