The annual Donkey Derby Days will once again take to the streets of Cripple Creek this weekend.

And every time I hear about this event, which is in its 83rd year, I get a wide smile on my face. How can onenot? After all, the Derby Days feature fun events like the “Hairy Legs Contest,” the “Big Ass Challenge,” a donkey calling contest and of course the donkey races.

I’ve even heard that The Gazette will have a team running in that “Big Ass Challenge,” a donkey race for members of the media from around the Pikes Peak Region.

The Donkey Derby Days begin Saturday at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast and run until all weekend. Hours for Saturday’s fun are 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The event will also last from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
