  • Expect fireworks all night at Sky Sox

    Public domain image, royalty free stock photo from www.public-domain-image.comThe Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers,  starts an eight-game homestand for the host Colorado Springs Sky Sox at 7:05 tonight.

    Considering that the fewest runs scored in one game so far in this season series was a 4-1 Sky Sox win on April 8, the fireworks may happen well before the scheduled postgame pyrotechnics.

    RHP Brett Tomko (2-2, 5.29 ERA), who has played for a nine PCL teams, takes on 2001 team Round Rock and RHP Phil Irwin (4-1, 2.52 ERA).

  • Sky Sox announce 2014 game promotions

    Sox the FoxThe Colorado Springs Sky Sox announced their 2014 promotional schedule which begins  with the home opener  Friday, April 11 against the Round Rock Express.

    Highlighting the 2014 promotional calendar are a new-high of 18 fireworks shows including 13 Friday night displays and special events including Thursday, July 3 and select Saturdays throughout the year. Saturday fireworks shows will include themes with live character appearances and performances including Star Wars on June 28, Star Trek on July 26, and Batman on August 23 for Sky Fest, the biggest fireworks show of the year.

    Fans may want to mark major events on their calendar including opening weekend April 11-13, Used Car Night on Saturday, July 12, and Todd Helton Mini-Statue giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 9.  Other popular mainstays return including   six Kids Eat Free Mondays, eight $2 Tuesdays, nine $3 Craft Brew Thursdays and 11 50¢ hot dog Sundays.

    Single-game tickets go on sale online on Monday, March 17. Go to the Sky Sox web site for more information and buy tickets.

  • Pregame notes: X-Men Night, Sky Sox starting rotation

    xmennightIt’s X-Men Night for tonight’s 6:05 p.m. game against Fresno, which scored seven in the top of the ninth to prevail Friday night.

    Right-hander Cory Riordan (4-3, 7.38 ERA) is scheduled to take on Fresno righty Mitch Lively (3-4, 6.00).  There will be postgame fireworks as well and plenty of good seats remain available at Security Service Field.

    Pitcher notes

    Righty Jeff Manship (5-8, 5.46 ERA) will start at 5:05 p.m. Sunday against a Fresno foe to be determined. Righty Chris Volstad (5-3, 4.91) closes out the homestand at 12:05 p.m. Monday. The scheduled time moved up 30 minutes to help the Sky Sox make a flight to New Orleans.  … Righty Mitchell Boggs, 29, was optioned down to Colorado Springs to make room for Rockies’ Saturday starter Collin McHugh. Boggs made two appearances for the Rockies after being acquired from the Cardinals on July 9.  After the trade, he was sent to Double-A Tulsa where he made four appearances converting one save in six innings (1.50 ERA).  The Dalton, Ga. native has in 234 career Major League games with 15 starts and has gone 13-15 with six saves and a 4.13 ERA.

    Famous San Diego ChickenLooks like there may be some seats remaining for tonight’s game. Take advantage of seeing The Famous San Diego Chicken and the postgame fireworks on a pleasant night (70 degrees) for baseball.


    The Sky Sox added right-hander Collin McHugh, 25, from Class AA Tulsa. He joined the organization after being traded by the Mets for Rockies outfielder Eric Young Jr. … Friday was Aces righty Diogenes Rosario’s Triple-A debut. He started the season with the Visalia Rawhide of the Class-A Advanced California League. … Righty Mark Serrano was transferred from Class AA Mobile and scheduled to take on recent Rockies starter Juan Nicasio after starter Zeke Spruill went on the 7-day disabled list.

  • Fireworks, The Famous San Diego Chicken highlight holiday weekend’s home games

    Famous San Diego ChickenThe recent rains allowed the Colorado Springs Fire Department to permit commercial fireworks displays in the city limits, opening the door for the Sky Sox’s Independence Weekend Fireworks Shows July 4-6.

    In addition, The Famous San Diego Chicken will lead the in-game entertainment Thursday and Friday. The Chicken will stay after each game to sign an autograph for everyone in attendance.
