Marisa Paukovich won’t get  a chance to undo Tuesday’s misery, when her Doherty Spartans fell flat in a 3-1 loss to Columbine in a 5A quarterfinal playoff game in Arvada.

As one of 10 seniors, she helped cement a legacy as Doherty returned to elite status in 5A. This season, the Spartans advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in recent memory.

But it still hurts to finish the season a few games short of a state title.

“Playing with these people for the last time is hard to let go,” the senior defender said. “I’ll try to make their games next year.”

Paukovich will attend the University of Denver but won’t play college soccer.

“This hurts now, but it’ll motivate the underclassmen,” Paukovich said. “We made it far and we made lots of memories, but we know there’s more in store here.”
