Stewart steps down from Pine Creek boys’ hoops

Pine Creek is hoping to elevate its boys’ basketball program to the level of some of its other successful programs.

DuCaye’t Stewart stepped down recently, opening up the head coaching position for the Eagles – one that’s already drawn the interest of about a half dozen candidates.

“I think we can get that, get Pine Creek back to being competitive in boys’ basketball, as well,” athletic director Matt Mahan said Friday.

The Eagles’ football and boys’ soccer teams each won the school’s first state titles in those respective sports in the fall. And the Eagles’ girls’ basketball team, coached by Stewart’s wife, Kelley, and led by a starting group that is all freshmen or sophomores, split the 5A Colorado Springs Metro League crown this season.

The boys’ basketball team hasn’t had that same kind of success. Under Stewart, the Eagles finished above .500 just once in his first season in 2010-11.

And this season had to rank among the most frustrating. The Eagles went 8-16, 1-9 in the 5A CSML. In league, the Eagles lost their first four games by a combined 10 points. And none of those by more than three points. They lost another two league games by single digits, beating only Palmer. The Eagles bowed out of the playoffs in the first round, as they’d done the three previous seasons.

Those close losses earned them a reputation as a team to fear, Mahan said.

“I think our kids responded well,” he said. “I never saw them give up or throw in the towel.”

Mahan is hoping to have a new coach in place by early May, adding that there could be a teaching position available too, if an applicant were interested in both.

“Duke did a good job while he was here,” Mahan said. “And we wish him the best in his endeavors.”

Stewart finished with a combined record of 43-53 overall, 17-23 in league.
