The drinking of the green is (bad beer?) tradition

Only one St. Patrick’s Day-themed green drink routinely passes the lips of this Sud Sister: the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. The treat is only available for a brief window – the month of March, give or take – around the holiday, which is a shame because it would taste just as good on Arbor Day or Halloween or with a bear trap attached to one’s leg.

But this is a beer blog, so let’s get to the green beer. If you’re planning for themed suds tonight, the lighter-hued the beer the better, said Diana De Cicco, a New York-based food writer for Sheknows.com.

The beer you use is important. You want to use a light-colored beer so the food coloring will easily mix. Using a dark beer (like Guinness) will require too much food coloring which may change the flavor of the beer, or not even color the beer at all.

De Cicco suggests adding a few drops of food coloring to a glass before adding the (light/bad) beer, and adjusting for hue as you pour. 

Thanks for the advice, but we’ll take the Guinness straight up.
