This time last year, if you had been told Von Miller wouldn’t have his first sack of the season until Week 8, what would be the reaction? The Broncos missed their star linebacker this season. But in the playoffs it wasn’t the crippling loss I expected. I was wrong about that. Due to a six-game suspension at the start of the season, and a knee injury at the tail end, Miller played in only nine games. His first sack didn’t come until the Redskins game, in Week 8.

The date: Oct. 27, Week 8.

The game: Broncos 45, Redskins 21.

The site: Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The notable: Remember the hullabaloo surrounding Peyton Manning’s bum ankle? All eyes were on the quarterback when he returned to practice on a Thursday prior to the Redskins game.

The column: To win big, Broncos and coach John Fox must be willing to take risks.
