Indy.1     Indy.2

With the close proximity of the bars, nightlife, hotels and everything else you’d need, Indianapolis makes a fine host for major sporting events. This felt like one. Colts fans were torn, many of them wearing the jersey of the opposing quarterback. “My wife has a pink No. 18 jersey,” the mayor of Indianapolis told me. “She might wear it.” If not for a goal-line fumble by Ronnie Hillman — why use Hillman there? — the 67,196 in attendance would’ve been treated to a classic Peyton Manning comeback.

The date: Oct. 20, Week 7.

The game: Colts 39, Broncos 33.

The site: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis.

The notable: During the pregame video tribute (above, left) honoring Manning, the quarterback tossed a football to Eric Decker. His eyes wandered to the Jumbotron, however, as he appeared to get emotional.

The column: Colts owner Jim Irsay transforms Peyton-Indy love story into a breakup.
