Chalk this up as pure speculation on my part. But it made a lot of sense in my head.
The Broncos and Seahawks are favored to win the AFC and NFC, respectively. Are they the best teams? Debatable. But I trust Las Vegas more than opinion, and Las Vegas says they are the favorites to win the AFC and NFC.
If that happens, the Broncos and Seahawks will meet in Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey on Feb. 2.
Is that the first game of their back-to-back?
The Broncos and Seahawks also are scheduled to play in Seattle next season. Given how the league prefers to have a humdinger of a matchup for the NFL kickoff, Denver-at-Seattle would seem to be a candidate for the 2014 opener, if one were to win the Super Bowl.
The Broncos have a recent history of revenge-type games in openers. They beat the Steelers in the divisional round of the playoffs in 2011… then opened the 2012 season against the Steelers in a Sunday night game. They lost to the Ravens in the 2012 divisional round of the playoffs… then opened the 2013 season against the Ravens in a Thursday night game, complete with Joe Flacco posters.
Why not a doubleheader (separated by seven months)?
Broncos vs. Seahawks, Super Bowl XLVIII.
Broncos at Seahawks, 2014 season opener.
Or we could just hold an AFC West reunion and see these teams play twice every season. The way each is playing at the moment, I don’t think anyone would mind seeing that.
