About a 110 years ago this summer, Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write what would eventually become “America the Beautiful.”
A Wellesley College professor at the time, Bates was visiting Colorado Springs and teaching that summer in 1893. The group of teachers celebrated the end of term by heading up the mountain.
She finished writing the piece before leaving the area, but the poem wasn’t published for another two years.
Wellesley is understandable proud of the connection to the song. Click here for a little more on the story.
