Buddha’s Birthday Celebration

Published: May 7, 2014, 12:00 pm, by Jen Mulson

Celebrate the big guy – Buddha, that is.

The Pikes Peak Buddhist Community will hold activities on Saturday in honor of Vesak, the Buddha’s 2,557th birthday. From the press release:

“Vesak typically falls on the fourth or fifth lunar month during the full moon, though the exact date varies in different countries. It marks the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana, or passing away of the Buddha’s physical body.”

There’ll be representatives from local sanghas (communities) telling the story of Buddha’s life, meditations, mindful eating practice, a Q&A about Buddhist traditions, music, food and chanting by local group Bhagavan Kirtan. Activities for kids include paper making and the creation and destruction of a sand mandala.
