11 armyThe largest solar array in the military will be constructed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., the Army announced in April.
The solar plant, built in concert with a local utility is expected to provide as much as 25 percent of the electricity used by the base. It’s part of a wider Pentagon move toward solar and wind power that has included the installation of solar plants in the Pikes Peak region at Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy.
“Energy is an installation priority,” said Maj. Gen. Robert Ashley, Fort Huachuca’s commander said in a statement.
“The project goes beyond the megawatts produced. It reflects our continued commitment to southern Arizona and energy security. The project will provide reliable access to electricity for daily operations and missions moving forward.”
The Army plans to produce 1,000 megawatts of solar power on bases by 2025.
