carsonFort Carson firefighters, who played a key role in dousing the Black Forest fire last month, have been helping battle blazes elsewhere in southern Colorado.

The post said firefighters from the post’s Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site in Las Animas County have helped fight the Pipeline and Crazy fires near Trinidad.

“Due to severe drought conditions, the 2013 fire season has been busy in southern Colorado. PCMS crews have assisted on numerous fires over the last month, including a fire caused by a downed power line off Highway 350 and two fires near La Veta,” the post said in a news release. “They also provided several days of assistance on the East Peak Fire.

Post officials are keeping a close eye on the 235,000-acre training area. Lightning storms over the area could touch off a big blaze on Pinon Canyon.

“The firefighters regularly use lightning data to track areas of concern on PCMS during frequent dry lightning storm,,” the post said. “Areas are checked for any signs of fire in an effort to detect fires early.”
