Like I said in the last post – I also bet on two Chiefs. If you missed the post about these bets you can catch up on it here.
Here are my other three bets …
Dwayne Bowe vs. Hakeem Nicks
It is not a stretch to think Bowe will be an elite receiver. Three seasons ago he scored 15 touchdowns and two years ago he had 81 receptions. Kansas City was just a mess last season and Bowe and the Chiefs are due for a bounce back. Andy Reid’s offense can succeed whenever one receiver is the focal point. Terrell Owens had monster seasons with the Eagles under Reid, scoring 20 touchdowns in two years. Nicks is a fantastic talent, but having owned him two of the past three seasons in fantasy, he is not worth the headache. I know he is in a contract year, but he has missed nine games in four years and that isn’t even counting the weeks he is questionable with nagging injuries. I had him out of my lineup a few times when he played because I was uncertain of his status. Bowe is the much safer pick, although the two players are both extremely talented. My friend argues that the Giants are in a superior offense to the Chiefs and, as a result, Nicks will put up better numbers.
Side note: One of the best fantasy football team names I have ever seen was about six years ago: Somewhere over Dwayne Bowe … check out this parody. No really – click on the classic video – it is either the worst thing ever or the best.
Alex Smith vs. Sam Bradford
Reports out of Kansas City are that the Chiefs have gone entire practices without running the ball – and this was before Jamaal Charles injured his foot. In this Missouri battle, I think the Rams are the better team – in the better division – but the Chiefs are going to put up better fantasy numbers. St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher has never been one to have his offense sling the ball all over the field. Reid has had Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb put up top 5 fantasy quarterback seasons under his tutelage. Hats off to any owner who hits it big on Bradford, but I don’t think he is in a system to reach his full statistical potential. If Bradford played for the Chiefs, and Smith played for the Rams, I would take Bradford in fantasy. I am totally betting on the system and not the talent of the quarterback. I disagree with the report in the Kansas City Star that the Chiefs’ QB coach said Smith ‘is the best in the league.’
Randall Cobb will be a top 10 receiver
I made this bet before Jordy Nelson had knee surgery – and now I am feeling even better about it. Cobb, who has been battling an injured arm in camp, is the new Percy Harvin – he is slump proof. He will run, he will catch and he could return kicks. Look at your fantasy quarterback rankings – where do you have Aaron Rodgers? Ok, now who do you have as the Packers’ leading receiver? Cobb in – Greg Jennings out. There isn’t much thought in this one. I will be surprised if Green Bay’s most dynamic playmaker is not a top 10 fantasy receiver.
Steven Jackson vs. Maurice Jones-Drew
If I could have a mulligan on my bets, it might be this one. I happened to catch Jackson in the Falcons’ preseason opener and he didn’t seem to have a burst. He did not pass the eye test. Then I read this story by Yahoo Sports about Jackson and it made matters worse. When I made the bet, I figured Jackson is an upgrade to Michael Turner (played for Atlanta last year) and Jones-Drew is on a team that I don’t expect to score many points. The only question I have about Jones-Drew is his health – but reports are that he is healthy. If the two each play 12 games – I would probably not bet Jackson again.
Odds and ends
Tom Brady’s leg injury on Wednesday did not appear too serious according to ESPN and the NFL Network. Reports are that Brady is day-to-day. A lot of websites are having fun with the fact Brady was dinged on Tim Tebow’s birthday. Receiver A.J. Green says that he is 100 percent healthy according to www.bengals.com
