The Fountain-Fort Carson High School JROTC rifle team set a Colorado State Championship match record by scoring 2,102 points to win the 2013 state title recently.
The JROTC Rifle program entered 5 teams all of which placed in the top 50% of the state by taking 1st, 5th, 6th, 13th, and 15th out of 30 teams, district officials said in an email.
In the 2-person team event, there were 16 teams competing. The Trojans won finished in 1st and 2nd place in the two-person teasm event. Nathaniel Cimino and Shane Trawick took 1st place and Korey Smith and Jesse Sprague won 2nd . Ian Bessler and Donovan Peyton placed 5th.
Nathaniel Cimino was named a Individual State Champion beating out 115 other competitors. Three other team members placed in the top 10 in the individual category: Donovan Peyton placed 4th, Jesse Sprague placed 7th, and Korey Smith placed 9th.
The team, whose instructor is Rodney Smith, set a national record in a 3 (position) x 10 (shots per position) match. They scored a 1,081 beating the previous record set in 2007 of a 1,072.
