Each day until the NHL Awards show June 24, The Gazette will run predictions of who will win certain awards, and who Angelo Stambene thinks should win the award.

Will win – When Alexander Ovechkin first came into the league with the Capitals I was not a fan. I thought he was a puck hog who shot too much and never passed, and when he scored this goal I said he could shoot that shot 100 times and never put it in again. But when he stuck a finger in the eye of the most hated man in hockey by skipping the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, he opened my eyes. I now appreciate Ovechkin for what he is, a goofball and absolute goal scoring machine.

Should win – Ovechkin scored 51 times this season, eight more goals than runner up Corey Perry of Anaheim, who played three more games than Ovechkin. It’s the fifth time that Ovechkin has scored more than 50 goals during a season, and 50 goal scorers do not come around often. In fact, over the last five years, there have been only six players who have gone over the 50 goal mark.
