Air Force continues to prepare for its season-opening games at the Kendall Classic Oct. 11-12 in Anchorage while hoping they get the chance to start the 2013-14 campaign. The Falcons will play New Brunswick in a home exhibition game at 6:05 p.m. Monday.
“All we can do is prepare for our season as usual,” coach Frank Serratore said. “The people who make those decisions will let me know.”
The Falcons are scheduled to open their season with nonconference games against Alaska-Fairbanks at 3:07 p.m. MT on Oct. 11 and Alaska-Anchorage at 5:07 p.m. Saturday. Air Force hosts Penn State the following weekend. The academy has said it plans to hold its home contests, but intercollegiate travel was cancelled.
Alternate funds were found for the Air Force at Navy football game Saturday morning.
The Army at Penn State games Oct. 11-2 are now a go, that service academy announced this morning. That may be because the road trip fro the Black Knights requires a bus, not an airplane to Alaska
Most of the academy support staff are considered civil-service employees, and are not eligible to travel, due to the partial federal government shutdown. Many other federal employees, including assistant coaches Andy Berg and Joe Doyle, are furloughed.
Former player Eric Ehn, on active duty at Peterson AFB, is handling more assistant duties.
“I guess you can say Eric got promoted,” Serratore said.
Official practices begin on Saturday.
