Colorado Springs’ Ben Holmstrom back on ice for Flyers

Holmstrom actionColorado Springs hockey player Ben Holmstrom saw his first game action Sunday night when Philadelphia took on Toronto in an NHL preseason game.

It was his first contest back since he underwent ACL surgery in December 2012. The forward injured his knee on Dec. 8.

Since signing with the Flyers, the former UMass-Lowell standout has played in seven NHL games (no points). He played in 22 for the American Hockey League’s Adirondack Phantoms where the captain tallied six points (four assists) last season. The 26-year-old has 90 points (54 assists) in 181 AHL games.

Holmstrom served three years as a River Hawks captain. His brother Josh Holmstrom is this year’s captain at UMass-Lowell.
