Former Tiger defenseman Calvin Elfring, the last of the 1995-96 NCAA runner-up squad still playing professionally, has signed with the Belfast Giants as he expected when last we talked in April.
He hoped to take advantage of the league’s master degree program, which pays for school at a nearby university, as he approaches retirement.
“I didn’t expect I would be 37 and still playing,” he said. “I just never wanted to give it up. I still love coming to the rink.”
He played 12 seasons in Germany, mostly with the Straubing Tigers where he recorded 17 points (13 assists) in 42 games as captain last season.
He joins former CC forward Brian McMillin who signed with England’s Coventry Blaze earlier this summer.
Past Tigers in the Elite Ice Hockey League are Noah Clarke (Belfast) last season and Alex Kim in 2011-12.
