The traveling party for Air Force at Navy is thin. Thinner, in fact, than most had anticipated, including those who thought they would be in Annapolis today.
As far as players, nothing changed. Same with coaches. Most of the support staff like the sports information department and athletic director Hans Mueh knew they weren’t going to be making the trip, as they are not allowed to work during the government shutdown.
However, the training and equipment crews thought they were making the trip until just before the charter left Colorado Springs on Thursday afternoon.
The trainers for today’s game will be three found in the Baltimore/Annapolis area. One is the brother of Air Force director of sports medicine Lt. Col. Gerald McGinty. As for the equipment guys? Well, let’s hope the players know how everything works at this point.
Those who made the flight talked about having a row to themselves, whereas usually it’s elbow-to-elbow.
We’ll see if any of this impacts the game itself, a game that, as you recall, nearly didn’t happen in the first place.
