Modern college recruiting, 140 characters at a time

For some reason, it struck me as particularly funny tonight when a high school kid from the Kansas City area Tweeted that he has “the most gorgeous and best girlfriend’ he could ever ask for. A smiley face followed.

I’m following this kid on the social media site because he is an athlete being recruited by Air Force. That’s the same reason Troy Calhoun is following him.

I just found it humorous to think of all the Twitter feeds that Calhoun is probably following and how many are from kids saying things just like that on a daily hourly minutely basis.

Now, I realize that coaching, especially in college, demands whole-life involvement. You want to know what makes a kid tick so you can get him on campus and then mold him once he’s there. I get all that. But I also think that if Troy Calhoun is personally monitoring the site that there must be times when he thinks to himself, ‘What did I sign up for.’

I just hope he doesn’t Tweet it.
