The happiest person at Mountain West Media Day was probably Karen Hayes.
Karen is wide-eyed mother of Air Force center Austin Hayes. She and her husband, Gary, decided to make the trip to Las Vegas from Dallas when they learned Austin would be one of two Falcons players representing the team in a busy day spent in front of television cameras and reporters.
Karen spent the day peaking inside of doors to see what her son was being asked to do next.
“They had one room where it was like a movie set,” Karen Hayes said. “They had the camera moving on a track and they said, ‘Austin, look up at this camera and then down at this one.’”
She couldn’t believe how far in advance some of the promotions were shot. For example, a crew from CBS Sports told her that film of Austin shot on Monday would be used in a promo for the Oct. 26 game against Notre Dame.
Karen said Austin showed little emotion when telling them he was going to get the chance to appear at media day, but she was downright giddy about it.
