Please share your thoughts on Air Force’s win over New Mexico

Published: October 21, 2012, 11:37 am, by David Ramsey

I’m still not sure how Air Force found a way to lose to UNLV and, especially, Navy.

And I’m still not sure how Air Force found a way to defeat Wyoming and New Mexico.  Not many teams get smoked for 338 yards rushing by a single back and still trot off the field as winners.

Your thoughts?

Well the good thing is that the Falcons have found some mental toughness at key times. Still way too many errors and way too many injuries to be a good team. Wes Cobb is a good trooper, nothing spectacular, but at least no fumbles, which is key. MacArthur will get a lot of touches in the next few games. Excellent games for Means and Christian Spears on defense.

Sunday morning leftovers from Saturday night…

Air Force has “won ugly” the last two weeks. Wyoming outplayed AFA in the first half, but the Falcons found just enough to sneak by the Cowboys in the second half.

In last night’s game I thought a turning point came in the opening drive by New Mexico. After Kasey Carrier scorched AFA with a sixty-eight yard run the Falcons stiffened on defense and held the Lobos to a field goal when a touchdown looked like a foregone conclusion. The Falcons couldn’t contain the Lobos’ ground game for much of the night, but authored a few critical third and fourth down stops when it most mattered.

Looking ahead to next year’s schedule Air Force plays Colgate at home to start the season. In a 57-36 win over Georgetown yesterday, Colgate QB Gavin McCarney– a junior who will return next season–amassed 510 yards of total offense and scored 5TDs. You might keep McCarney’s name in mind for next year’s meeting.

I have a close friend who lives in Georgia who tells me he’s read reports in the Atlanta Constitution detailing a home and home series to be played between AFA and Georgia State. The Falcons would play in Atlanta in 2014 with the Panthers coming to the academy in 2016. Former NFL star Bill Curry is the Georgia State head coach.

My own $.02 is that I give Air Force little chance to beat Nevada this coming Friday. The Wolfpack suffered a 39-38 OT loss, at home, to San Diego State last night after entering the fourth quarter with a 10 point lead. My hope is that several of the Falcons who sustained injuries last night [and in games before last night] recover to such an extent that they can help Air Force defeat Army in two weeks.

  3. I wish we could blog about CC Hockey in general, and its win over Air Force 6-2 : )

  4. It was not a pretty win but a soul searching victory. Our guys dug deep with a lot…I mean a lot…of starters out. You never hear Coach Calhoun say too much about any of the reasons. I really think these hard fought victories are going to pay dividends on down the road. We might beat someone we shouldn’t.
Coach Davies has done a great job at New Mexico. He has some major talent. He has brought a bit of class to that program.
All wins for this squad are great ones, no matter how they look.

  5. Well, I was at Michigan and don’t think that there’s little chance of beating Nevada. I think that there is a good chance. This team has overcome turnovers and injuries to key players to post its last two wins, which is the sign of a team with a lot of heart and talent. Heart alone won’t get it done.

Air Force is an FBS team, not FCS, so there is no excitement about playing a team in the lower subdivision. Those games are just filler.

It was a beautiful night for football, and despite a number of AFA mistakes, it came down to the ability of the defense to make a fourth-down stop and then the offense’s ability to run out the clock by making first downs. Both came through. Way to go, Falcons!

  6. Colorado College 6 Air Force 2 Final! And it wasn’t even that close. I guess that shuts Serratore up …… for at least 24 hours LOL. The series is now 59-8-2 in favor of CC over AF.

Hey east coast, Thanks for the info on Georgia State University. Air Force has opened the season for about the last fifteen to eighteen years by playing an FCS team and apparently there’s no plan to stop that as the game with Colgate next year and the GSU games suggest. Even if AFA fans don’t like it playing games against FCS competition early in the year seems to be here to stay.

I think you’re right that Nevada is going to be tough for Air Force especially with all the injuries, but hope springs eternal.

Congratulations CCFan it is and always have been a Tiger hockey town during the Winter, the Falcons win last year was a fluke.

And as for AF Football, we’re a little down this season, but the Mtn West is really down, so I still feel good for a bowl game. Army is awful and we still have a couple wins coming in conference. Games like UNM and Wyo we found a way.

  9. I rather have an ugly win the a pretty loss. The number of fumbles it get to be just crazy. They can’t stop the run or hold on to the football, but other than that, they’re a heck of a team.

    Dave,
What is with the sledge hammer thing before they run onto the field? Is it a throwback to the late 80′s when AFA defense had the saying “it’s hammer time”?

  10. Hey CC fans, go post on CC boards, then go find out how to win some conference C-ships or Natl. C-ships. Go Gophers!!! 161-85-7

  11. There is no CC Hockey Blog functioning on gazette.com right now.
Goofers don’t have that many more championships than CC. Pretty amazing considering Minnesota is the hotbed of American hockey, Minnesota typically hosts its championships, and CC is a high academic private school of 1,950 students that costs $50,000 to attend compared to Minnesota where all you need is a pulse and you can get in. Hope to see you at The World Arena in December. Go Tigers!

    CCFan,

Produce an All American roster with no transfers as well as an entire roster which actually graduates in 4 years and we’ll talk hockey on a level playing field.

Still smarting from that 2-1 loss at the World Arena last year to a bunch of short haired American boys who will never get drafted by the NHL? Or is it your perceived second rate coverage of your beloved Tiggers in the Gazette which brings out your insecurity?

    Thought so! Go Falcons!!

How the hell did the CC fans bogart this USAFA FOOTBALL thread?????

  14. Weasel on said:

Let’s look at a sobering fact. Since DeRuyter left, the defense has disappeared. In his tenure, we had talent and a scheme. No more. Until we can restore that level of play, we cannot expect a top 25 year. And I personally think that should be one of Calhoun’s goals. Oh, and we get to face said defensive genius in a few weeks.

  15. david ramsey on said:

    About the Gazette’s CC blog:

The blog will be back up in full operation and running soon. We are hiring a new hockey writer, and he – or she – will be writing constantly about the mighty Tigers.

Nice win by the Tigers over the Falcons. Air Force was the city champ, but now CC is once again the city champ

  16. Lobos04 on said:

Oh don’t worry, the CC Tigers will underperform again this season. It is as predictable as the sun rising. We’ll see which team is still standing at the end of the year.

  17. UNM has made great progress under Davey – so a close win is nothing to embarrassed about. But this team is still a bit of an enigma. They could finish anywhere from 7-5 and a Bowl, to 5-7 and Calhoun’s first losing season. But as another poster noted – I don’t see this program getting any better until the Defense improves – especially the D-line.

  18. jimbo84 on said:

Air Force dug deep and made the plays when they needed to – holding NM to a field goal on the opening drive and Mean’s interception/touchdown run were big. I thought AF had trouble tackling all night – I’m still not sure how NM’s Carrier was able to squirt through for the number of yards he did – everyone in the stands knew who was getting the ball – and that he was going to run between the tackles; but he was something special.
The weather was incredible though – game ended and it was still about 60 degrees outside…can’t beat that.

  19. Davie has done a good job with UNM..until their last offensive play. 4th and 4, game on the line, and you’ve got a running back who has torched the defense for 338 yards. Why in the world would you not give him the ball? Sometimes coaches out-think themselves…

That being said, a nice win for the Falcons.

  20. Glad the CC Hockey Blog is coming back!!!
6-2 CC win over Air Force without any transfers, not even sure what that means “Bird”. The kid who scored 4 goals against Air Force is from Phoenix and most of the players are American. And we typically only have a kid leave before graduation once every couple years. For a multi-million dollar contract, I don’t blame them at all. CC is a great academic school and the huge majority of the players do care about their degree and taking academics seriously. The others go to North Dakota or Minnesota or Duluth.
And “Lobos 04″, CC has made 10 Frozen Fours, 20 NCAA Tourneys and 15 Elite 8′s……and CC plays in the WCHA, while AF plays in Atlantic Hockey. Talk to ME when AF joins a BCS-type hockey conference, winning the Big Sky or America East of hockey means nothing.
Anyone at the CC-AF game Friday night knows the truth, but maybe you were getting the grill ready to tailgate at that “great” UNM-AF football battle LOL. And by the way have fun freezing your ass off this Friday night vs. Nevada. I’ll enjoy the 70-degree World Arena in my padded chair back seat with my beer while I watch the Tigers.
Go Tigers let’s beat Air Force next season for #60 in 70 games!!! I think AF football even has a better record vs Notre Dame football than that.

  21. CC Hockey 6 AF 2 – Final
59-8-2 all time record CC over AF.
    Victory tastes oh so sweet

  22. CC fans. No one outside of Colorado Springs cares about you. Heck, most don’t know you exist. Play on national TV (tournament excluded) and then talk. Win something substantial but until then, just wait for your own blog. Im sure students & alumni will get alot out of it but as for everyone else…

I am an Air Force football fan and a CC hockey fan. I would dare to say most of Colorado Springs is in the same boat. I’m not sure why Air Force fans get so jealous of CC hockey and try to down play their success. Air Force hockey is a lower level than CC, that’s a fact. Now as for Air Force football I feel good about the program and I see a bowl game on the horizon. Good luck to CC hockey and Air Force football. Go Falcons and Tigers – both great representatives of the greater Colorado Springs area.

  24. The CIC trophy is lost, AF is an average football team at best this season….CC destroyed AF in hockey. It is officially hockey season in Colorado Springs. I for one am not sorry about that.

  25. Jealous? Why would AF football fans be jealous of CC hockey? Are you kidding me? Look, all I’m saying is this: if a CC fan is wearing a Jersey outside of Colorado Springs and maybe Denver, I’m sure peop le wonder when the Missouri Tigers started a hockey program. I truly have nothing against them (CC) but really, who cares.

NM is a whole new outfit. After 10 years out of recruiting, the ex ND HC seems to be getting it done. Watch out 2013.

Great show by the Falcons to win. NM gave our cadets a preview of Nevada.

Realistically, AFA will have tough going the week at home, and later at SDSU and at Fresno State. The Falcons should prevail at Army and over Hawaii Senior night.
Thus 6-6 would be acceptable with the NM Bowl.

Need to play some youngsters as many key seniors actually graduate and serve.
CC hockey fans note the word, graduate.

  27. Help me out guys, I don’t live in C-Springs . . . CC??? Is that Central Connecticut? Coastal Carolina? Or is it just a generic abbreviation for “community college?”

Whatever it is, why would fans of it be posting under a story about Air Force football? I guess it’s not surprising they’d have nowhere else to go, but still . . .

  28. This team has to stop turning the ball over. Their defense is not very good and w/Getz hampered by an injury, this team isn’t good enough to win games when they have multiple turnovers. They had UNLV beat, going in for another score, but a fumble turned that game around. They had Navy beat, but numerous fumbles turned that game around. Tough game on Friday. Unless AF scores on nearly every possession, I don’t see how they stick w/a good Nevada team that has a potent offense. i can see Nevada putting up 40+ on Friday night.

  29. AF football fans, the next time you are in Colorado Springs, because it sounds like most all of you live outside of Colorado Springs, check out a CC (or Colorado College for those of you that may be mistaken) Hockey game at the Colorado Springs World Arena – you’ll see why it is a big deal. I’m surprised you don’t know it’s the biggest event in Colorado Springs from November through to March. Colorado College hockey outdraws Air Force hockey AND basketball attendance by more than double, over 160,000 fans attend Colorado College hockey games per season. That’s why AF football and CC hockey are both a big deal in Colorado Springs.

Air Force plays like a young team. They seem to play to the level of their opponents. In the last couple of games the defense has been weak early, then came up big late. It would be nice to have a game thats not so close, but a win is a win.

  31. Frederic N.Halstrom on said:

CC plays good hockey. I live near Boston where perhaps 10 schools play top level college hockey. BC, BU, UMassLowell, Harvard, Northeastern, plus Bentley, Holy Cross, Merrimack, UNH, UConn, etc.

Good that this paper will give CC fans a place to go. Good Bye.

A few NCAA football tidbits culled from cyberspace. The first is from an article dealing with some of the “good”hirings at the head coaching position.

[1]Tim DeRuyter (Fresno State head coach)

Pat Hill built a great program, but he was out last year after the team tied a school record for losses. Enter the defensive-minded DeRuyter, who has quickly gotten the Bulldogs on the cusp of going to a bowl and has them playing well. Their three losses are to teams with a combined 20-2 record, and both the offense and defense are in the top 30 nationally. The team could finish second in the Mountain West, which is quite the turnaround for a first-time head coach.

If you think fewer kickoffs are being reurned this year here’s a stat to back your suspicions.

[2]The NCAA notes that new rules changes have led to 1,450 touchbacks recorded on kickoffs at the FBS level through the first six weeks of the season. Last year, 1,397 touchbacks were registered on kickoffs.

Finally, if you think scoring is up, defense is down and pass completion percentage is going through the roof, you’re right again.

[3]Also, scoring across FBS is at 29.8 points per game so far this season. That’s on pace to be the highest scoring average since the NCAA started keeping stats in 1937. Total offense, passing yards and completions are also on track to be records.

    One final note:
TCU has played more freshmen than anybody in the country (16).

  33. USAFA SIOUX on said:

Since some people feel like they have to comment on the overall record of CC vs AF Hockey, UND’s record vs CC is 137-76-11.

  34. Frosty on said:

AFA fan here…no, I’m not jealous of CC, though I must point out that most people outside of Colorado don’t know if it is located in Boulder or Ft Collins (smile)…what continues to puzzle me is, why do CC fans feel it is so important to let everyone know they have beer at their games? Do you have to get a buzz on to watch CC hockey? Outside of hockey, CC is, and always will be, an insignificant school…I wouldn’t even be writing this if their fans had not bugged into a blog about an AF football game.

  35. USAFA SIOUX – do you know your fans say “Home of the Sioux” instead of Home of the Brave at the end of the National Anthem? That doesn’t go over well in this town at The World Arena. We’ll see you Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Over the last 20 years, the CC-UND series has been even for the most part. Hey I’ll admit UND Hockey is an elite program year in and year out….but the big talk in this town was that AF hockey was at the same level as CC hockey – which is simply not try whatsoever. So the 6-2 domination was a lot of fun.

  36. Lobos04 on said:

See, the thing is, I am not ANTI CC hockey. Quite the opposite. However, they are a frustrating team to watch the last decade or so. I am an AFA fan first, but I don’t resent CC or even feel a genuine rivalry with them.

brownshoe- those who get a 5th year are medical turnbacks…it is an option if injuries are severe enough to make keeping up with classes difficult, or if treatment keeps them out of classes for a while. while it is most often seen with athletes, other cadets have received medical turnbacks under the same conditions. sometimes it is offered to cadets and they turn it down. way back when I was a cadet, a guy from ’93 had a lacerated liver…nearly died. he did the second semester of his 2-degree year from the hospital.
