Vegas beats Calhoun and company – the low point?

Published: September 24, 2012, 7:14 am, by David Ramsey

I’m saying Saturday’s 38-35 loss to UNLV is Air Force’s worst loss since, well, the last time the Falcons lost to UNLV in 2006.

The games, when you think about it, are similar. In both games, Air Force’s offense delivered a solid game. In both games, the Falcons defense was basically defenseless.

Was Saturday the worst loss of the Troy Calhoun era, which started in 2007? Let me know what you think.

It’s going to be a long, long year if we can’t play defense. We are young, inexperienced, outweighed, and right now, outplayed and perhaps outcoached on the defensive side of the ball. Someone recently said it, we have to be able to stop third down success by opposing teams!

  2. I agree they need the offense at times to be able to sustain a long TIME CONSUMING drive from time to time.

  3. The defensive line is getting zero pressure –They better look farther into the depth chart for some quickness and athletes that can create some havoc by beating the man in front of them!

  4. I didn’t see the UNLV game, but saw the two others. 3 and 4 defenders won’t get to the QB. A better scheme is needed to keep pass blockers guessing as to where extra pressure is coming from. That being said, AF will not win many games scoring 7 points in the second half or any half for that matter.

In order for the defense to play right is to have them review the plays that were successful against them in all of the games this year and last. The AF defenders play too far off of the receivers and the QB’s just throw flare passes out to the sidelines and automatically gain 5 yds each time before the defender can get to the receiver.

Also passes right across the middle are very effective against the AF defense. Even I can see what’s happening up in the stands. We can almost foresee what the next play is going to be. It was that way last year and again this year!

  6. Worst loss – probably, but we’ll have to see how the season plays out. Calhoun has only lost to 1 losing team in 5 years – a close loss to 6-7 Minnesota. I’ll be surprised if UNLV comes up with a winning record..but its possible.

But this is far from the most disappointing loss. I came into this season with low expectations. And when were those expectations lowered? Last years annihilation by TCU. That was probably the most disappointing loss of the Calhoun era. The lopsided final score didn’t really reflect how brutal the beat down was. Losing to TCU – no big deal. Getting blasted in game 2 of the season at home with a team full of seniors? Problem. The Defense is just soo soft. The program need a d-lineman like Garland to get back on track.

Sadly, it is the same old AFA D problem. Cannot rush the passer. D line is fighting but cannot do the job. Midrange passes over the center either to the TE on from UNLV the slots.

The two D AFA players who did next to zero to stop the UNLV receiver from scoring down the sideline. What was that? SIX points! They gave up! Two of them, right before the AFA band, etc.gave up!

D is always a AFA season key. Once again it is a Falcon game killer.

I was there and heard Calhoun say on UNLV pre game radio show how great the UNLV QB was NFL level, and he was. Almost all his throws were on target. AT 6-5 and that arm, UNLV was rise.

    Calhoun said Getz was 162#.

The D and tackling must upgrade a lot SOON. Thank God for CSU.
Navy must be licking its chops after viewing the D effort by the Dbs at AFA.

Go Falcons, beat the RAMS. And root for UNLV to finish plus 500.

BTW, UNLV was 72% on third down. Oh my.

Pray we are 3-2 and not 1-4 or 2-3 by Sunday 7 October.

The D will be the season, again.

  10. Worse loss… Not even close.

Worse loss was 3 Oct 2009 against Navy in OT. In OT, we go for 4th down and the win, instead of taking the FG to tie. We converted! Then three straight FB dives up the middle to try the FG anyway? The fact we missed the FG wasn’t the focus of my anger… It was the three plays prior. At the time I wanted to throw TC under the bus. I’ve settled down a bit through the years and only want to throw him under the bicycle.

“Worst loss?” doesn’t matter. Suffice it to say yeah it was a BAAAAAHD loss.

I’m more interested to see how this team responds against a wounded CSU team.

Perhaps the media Gods getting even for Troy C’s media blackout after Michigan?

Retain the CIC trophy outright this season and I’ll consider this year a verified success.

Bottom line is this team can win or lose every remaining game this year. There are NO layups in the remaining schedule.

UNLV played great and will win some games. Their QB is quite good.
AFA D sentences the team to a barely 500 season. CIC would be nice. Let’s see how Navy and Army do this weekend. San Jose State is not VMI. A Navy loss will be telling.

AFA MUST beat CSU before the Wing.

  13. Agree with Frederic that this is a must win vs. CSU…I truly believe the outcome will determine the path the Falcons follow for the near future (i. e., Navy, Wyoming, New Mexico, all three winnable games).

Worst loss in Troy’s career? Would have to give it to 2007 vs. New Mexico…not that they were a horrible team (at the time), but the FIVE turnovers that basically gave the game away…at least a 2, maybe 3, that were unforced. Hated losing to the Lobos.
