Despite losing record, Air Force tabbed for third network TV appearance

Air Force is 3-4, the first time in coach Troy Calhoun’s time as Falcons coach that one of his teams has a losing record. Nonetheless, Air Force will be back on national network television on Nov. 5, as CBS picked up the Falcons’ home game against Army, which is 2-5, for its 1:30 p.m. Mountain time slot.

The game was scheduled to be on Versus at the same time, but CBS had an opening because the clash between LSU and Alabama was moved to prime time. CBS had good luck with Air Force’s first service academy rivalry game this season, as it broadcast the Falcons’ thrilling 35-34 win at Navy on Oct. 1. The Falcons were also on NBC against Notre Dame a week later.

CBS is a profit maximizing business, so there must be a fair amount of interest in Service Academy football…but I suspect its draws more eyeballs due to national respect for the Military as an institution than SA Football.

Its also likely to be a close game. Army is improving, and Calhoun gets conservative when he gets ahead.

While I never expect Air Force to get the national attention that Army-Navy does, this is a significant event and opportunity for Air Force.

With AFA in a great position to win and retain the Commanders in Chief trophy again this year, to do it before a national TV audience is significant. In years past this “2nd Service Academy” game was marginally televised and the only people who knew Air Force won the trophy were those who followed Service Academy football and brief mentions were made during the Army-Navy game in December on CBS.

This year the entire nation will be exposed to the significance of the 11/5 contest as the both teams have a lot to play for in this game!
