Air Force to Big East? Well, Rick Pitino says so

Well, we’ve gotten to the point of conference realignment speculation where Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is apparently breaking news. Here’s what Pitino had to say about Air Force and the Big East, to ESPN.com:

“Pitino said he was told that the Big East will add service academies Air Force and Navy by the end of the week — but only in football,” ESPN.com’s Andy Katz wrote.

For what it’s worth, from what I know Air Force-to-Big East is not imminent – not to say it won’t happen, but it hasn’t happened yet. There are a lot of factors that will go into that decision – not the least of which is that the Big East has taken some major hits already and might take some more. But, the academy has been very quiet on the issue – I was told yesterday very clearly that Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, Air Force’s superintendent, would not be speaking about the matter to me – so nothing can be dismissed.

  1. This would be a bad move. The Big East is falling apart.

    Don’t do it General Gould.

  3. Nooooooooo! I’m getting a bad feeling. None of us wants to be in the Big East!

  4. Well, that makes sense. Nothing communicates “Big” and “East” quite like a service academy of 4,400 cadets in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.

If this happens, AFA will never be as successful recruiting in Texas as they are today. A death-blow for AFA football. Pitt and Syracuse have already left, West Virginia and Rutgers want to join the ACC, and East Carolina has expressed an interest in joining the Big East. Travel will be a financial nightmare. The Big East just may lose their BCS affiliation. Navy and Army to the Big East, much more appropriate, but AFA, No Way!

I would just like to know how a move to the Big East would in any way “benefit the cadets and Academy”.

Of the two options that Air Force has (stay in the MWC or move to another conference), the Big (Little) East would be the absolute worse choice!!!!!!

As I see it AFA has two legitimate choices: Stay in the MWC or go independent. In a situation of doubt……do nothing and maintain the status quo. You can always defect and go independent at a later date.

My hope is that General Gould is consulting with competent subject matter experts in the field of D-1 athletics like former AFA AD Randy Spetman (now the AD at Florida State) and not just consulting his inner circle of Air Force grads and former players.
