Broncos still interested in Garland

Here’s a story with some comments from Ben Garland, who asked for Air Force reclassification – basically giving up pilot training for a shot at the NFL.

One thing I didn’t get to talk much about in the story was whether the Broncos were as interested in him as he was in being a Bronco. He was signed last year when Josh McDaniels was in charge, and while general manager Brian Xanders is still around, the coaching staff and front office has experienced a lot of change. John Fox is the new head coach. The Broncos plan to change defenses, back to a 4-3.

Garland said he went to visit with the coaching staff this offseason.

“I was really relieved after I did,” Garland said. “They said they heard good things about me and they wanted to see more of me.”

Garland said he understands he still has a long way to go to make the NFL. But he is in great shape for it. He is 295 pounds but has gotten stronger. He said he passed his Air Force fitness test with a score of 90 and is happy with the shape he is in.

If it doesn’t work with the Broncos, Garland said he could still pursue being a pilot, but that would be a difficult process and he has no guarantees he could get a spot in pilot training again.

“It’s not going to be easy, but there’s still a chance, it’s not dead,” Garland said.
