Pilot in Kinnick Stadium flyover to leave Air Force

One of the best parts of Air Force football games are the pregame flyovers, which are always entertaining. But there are rules, and breaking them during a flyover at an Iowa football game at Kinnick Stadium last season has led to punishment for Air Force pilot Maj. Christopher Kopacek.

According to HawkCentral.com, which is run by the Des Moines Register and Iowa City Press-Citizen, Kopacek violated four military rules and will leave the Air Force of his own accord. The story has the details of what rules he broke.

Sure many of you have seen the video of the flyover – it’s pretty amazing if you haven’t.

This is a tough one. Seems like an over-reaction BUT rules were violated and the military is about discipline and following rules. Still seems somewhat along the lines of – “much ado, about nothing”.

story says they air traffic control had them at 16 feet above the press box, 50 above the scoreboard, incredible to witness but highly reckless considering the size of the unshletered crowd directly below them, a minor error at that speed and you are killing more people than the WTC attacks. Those rules are in place for a very good reason.

  4. Was the flyover awesome? You bet. Was it illegal? Heck yes. There are safety rules in place to reduce the chance of accidents and the pilots broke the rules, and not by accident. The lead pilot is a jack@$$ who was leaving the Air Force anyway. He thought he could get away with a “Top Gun” move and show off to his family in the press box….nice try Hollywood.
