I spoke with Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh here in Las Vegas this afternoon after the women’s basketball team lost in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament to Utah, 63-40.
We chatted about the men’s basketball program (for a story I’ll be doing later this week) and coach Jeff Reynolds. Mueh endorsed Reynolds and said he wants the coach back next year.
I’ll have more from our conversation tomorrow morning in the blog.

If we can’t fire Reynolds because of the cost. Could we fire his assistants and demote him so that he works for Capt Tom Belairs? If we can’t afford to fire Reynolds, General Gould should at least fire Dr. Mueh – he made the mistake of extending Reynolds.
Also – certainly General Gould should make sure that the women’s coach is let go. Don’t we have to do something to try to retain some dignity in the basketball programs? We certainly don’t think being the nation’s worst is acceptable – do we General Gould?
I don’t blame Mueh for publicly supporting Reynolds. I can even understand giving him another year (sort of). But extending the contract was nuts. I would love to see The Gazette do an objective review of the job done by Dr. Mueh. Not a puff piece on how he played soccer and loves cadet athletes, or was a pretty good chemist. Turn Ramsey loose.
I think I’m going to be sick.
All the excuses are ridiculous. Every team faces adversity in some way in a season. The mark of a good coach is getting the players to respond to these adversities. A mark of a good coach is also having a decent offensive system in place.
Mueh and Reynolds both need to go!
