Loose Ends

Here are some tidbits I wasn’t able to fit in my notebook that appeared in Tuesday’s edition of The Gazette.

You can see that notebook here. It deals mostly with the news that senior Ty Paffett, who is expected to be the Falcons’ starter at Z-receiver (the hybrid running back/receiver position that Chad Hall played last year), might undergo back surgery for a herniated disc on June 26.

Anyway, onto the notes:

-Practice is likely to start on July 31 (a Thursday). The Falcons’ practice schedule currently is at the compliance office awaiting final approval.

-If practice does start on July 31, Air Force will hold its annual media day on July 30 in the afternoon.

-Air Force’s marketing department has come up with a new poster to promote the 2008 season. It features close-up shots of seniors Travis Dekker (tight end), Ryan Harrison (kicker) and Ryan Kemp (defensive end) in their uniforms. The poster contains the slogan “Athletes, Leaders, Champions.”

-Later today I’ll be posting the next edition of the First Look Series. This week: CSU.

Any idea where we can get a look at this new poster? Is it online somewhere? LOVE the slogan. I think it really characterizes the Academy scholar-athlete, and features a senior player from each of the three phases of the game–offense, defense, and special teams. I only wish it featured a photo of Calhoun as well….but that is not his style–way too humble. (Part of the reason I wish he were on it!) Didn’t he flatly refuse last year to be on the cover of the media guide, and instead put photos there of his seniors. He’s not just a great coach, but a class act as well.

    Thank you, Mrs. Calhoun….

I will check to see where people can get that poster. It is pretty cool looking.

And, yes, it’s true about the media guide last year. The media relations folks wanted to put him on the cover, but he said, “No thanks.” He wanted players on it.

Got an answer on the poster. According to AF sports information director Troy Garnhart, they are available at the tickets office or you can call marketing to get one — (719) 333-2626.
